For a period of 4.5 hours each night, Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, Arizona has absolutely no security. From ABC15 Investigative Team:

Night after night, our hidden cameras captured what security experts tell us is a disaster waiting to happen. The X-ray machines were off, the metal detectors were closed, and bags with unknown contents were carried to the secure side of the airport where the planes are.

ABC15 consulted with Larry Wansley, former head of security for American Airlines and currently a consultant for the US government, and asked his opinion on the situation at Sky Harbor Airport:

"It is not security," he said. "It truly is not security. Anything can be going through there. I don't get it. Clearly this is a very, very imminently dangerous situation… I simply do not understand it and I'm appalled. I'm shocked and I'm amazed."

Today, three days after the story broke, TSA chief Kip Hawley — the man tasked with keeping US airports safe and secure — did what TSA does best: he reacted.

As a result of an ABC15 Investigation, Transportation Security Administration administrator Kip Hawley says his department is now reviewing security procedures at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. The TSA has placed the Federal Security Director at Sky Harbor on administrative leave.

If the new Federal Security Director needs an official TSA shirt, maybe he can hurry over to the Salvation Army and find one, like nurse Mary Ellen Zigli did recently.

  • Cost of an official TSA Screener shirt at the Salvation Army: $2.50 cents
  • Cost to fund TSA's 2007 aviation "security" budget: $4.7 billion
  • Cost to keep your kids safe from terrorist hijackers: priceless
