An Iraqi national hiding electrical wires and a magnet inside his rectum attempted to board a flight from Los Angeles to Philadelphia Tuesday morning. The 35-year old man, identified by airport police as Fadhel al-Maliki, set off an alarm during the passenger screening process at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The bomb squad was called in. TSA security director Larry Fetters told reporters:

"He [al-Maliki] was secreting these items in a body cavity and that was a great concern because there were also some electric wires associated with that body cavity."

Al-Maliki was held for questioning. Meanwhile, the TSA neglected to remove A-Maliki's more traditional luggage from the plane so flight 1422, with its 153 passengers, was eventually diverted to Las Vegas. The Airbus A320 was parked on the tarmac in a "secure area away from terminals" while federal agents searched the plane.

The incident has triggered a slew of creative headlines around the world, including Australia's The Age: "Iraqi passenger triggers bum alert."
